Sunil Bhoyrul, MD, FACS, FRCS

Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul has joined United Medical Doctors and is recognized as one of the preeminent and most experienced general and bariatric surgeons in San Diego. Furthermore, he serves as the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla and Sharp Coronado Hospital.

He attained his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. Subsequently, he commenced his surgical training in London, England, and was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 1993. His post-doctoral training included a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, prior to the completion of his Surgical Residency at Stanford University Medical Center.

Dr. Bhoyrul currently practices surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital, Sharp Coronado Hospital, and Sharp Memorial Hospital. His practice is concentrated on advanced minimally invasive gastrointestinal and weight loss surgery. He maintains a specific clinical and research focus on surgery for super obesity, gastrointestinal oncology, and is one of a limited number of surgeons who perform resections for pancreatic, gastric, and esophageal malignancies.

Dr. Bhoyrul is a co-author of one of the foundational texts on laparoscopic surgery and has been dedicated to the provision of patient care in San Diego for over 20 years. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and currently serves as a principal investigator in an ongoing study aimed at advancing the application of artificial intelligence to enhance the safety of cholecystectomy. He has presented his work at various professional conferences, most recently at Oxford University.
