Dr. Michael Morell earned his Bachelor of Science with High Honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and received his medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of California, Irvine, and then his fellowship at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wisconsin, specializing in bariatric surgery. His original award-winning research in bariatric surgery was presented at the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Following the fellowship, Dr. Morell started a thriving private practice in General and Bariatric Surgery in the Central Valley, CA, with Adventist Health. He played a key role in achieving the Bariatric Center of Excellence designation for Adventist Health Hanford. He relocated to San Diego in 2023 to be closer to his family and friends and to reconnect with his roots. He joins United Medical Doctors in January 2026 specializing in general and bariatric surgery.

Areas of expertise include: Bariatric/Weight-loss (Gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, SADI-S) surgery; Laparoscopic and Robotic minimally invasive surgery; foregut (GERD, myotomy, gastric cancer) surgery; hernia surgery; gallbladder surgery; colon and intestinal surgery; cancer surgery; and endoscopy.
