Joshua Barnhill, MD
PAIN MANAGEMENT
Dr. Joshua Barnhill grew up in St. Louis, MO, and earned his medical degree at Saint Louis University. Following graduation, he served over ten years in the United States Navy, earning both the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for meritorious service.
He completed his internship in General Surgery at Naval Medical Center San Diego in San Diego, CA. He then served as the Command Flight Surgeon for Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 120 in Norfolk, VA, where he also worked aboard three different aircraft carriers. Dr. Barnhill then completed the Anesthesiology residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP). Following residency, he practiced as Staff Anesthesiologist at NMCP and Assistant Professor for the Uniformed Services University. During this time, he served as the Chairman of the Short Term Opioid and Intraoperative Therapy Committee and as the Anesthesia Department Head aboard the USNS Comfort on the humanitarian mission, Operation Enduring Promise, to Peru Ecuador, Colombia, and Honduras. After his military service, he completed fellowship training at the University of California Los Angeles in Santa Monica, CA.
Dr. Barnhill strongly believes each patient deserves a customized approach and multimodal treatment strategy tailored to their goals to achieve functional improvement.
He treats complex regional pain syndrome, cancer pain, migraines, and musculoskeletal pain conditions, including back pain, neck pain, myofascial pain, neuropathic pain, joint pain, and post-surgical pain. Procedures performed include but are not limited to Epidural steroid injections, Selective Nerve Root Blocks, Joint injections, Nerve Ablations, Trigger Points, Sympathetic Blocks, Peripheral nerve injections, and Botulism Toxin injections for migraine/pain. He is interested in various advanced interventional therapies, including Spinal Cord Stimulation, Peripheral Nerve Stimulation, and Dorsal Root Ganglion stimulation.
He is an active member of The American Society of Pain & Neuroscience, the North American Neuromodulation Society, the American Society of
Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, and the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, running, hiking, and going to the beach.
