Evan-Winograd

Evan K. Winograd, MD

Neurosurgery

Evan Winograd never grew up thinking of being a doctor. First, his alt-rock garage band never took off the way he dreamed it might. Then, college courses geared toward business and a potential career in international law never materialized. He found himself in a neurobiology class, his junior year at UW- Madison, absolutely mesmerized by the brain. This launched him on a path toward more advanced courses in an endeavor to learn more about human physiology and pathology. An opportunity arose to take a path toward medicine with some international flavor. Training at the Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel, he enjoyed the opportunity to learn from a diverse array of world-class thought leaders in their respective fields who had trained globally. The rigorous training was paired with the more human side of medicine, with coursework and group sessions focused on the physician-patient relationship. Eventually, this led to an even more rigorous neurosurgical residency in Buffalo, NY, at the University of Buffalo Neurosurgery program and eventually a focused year on brain and pituitary tumors as a neurosurgical oncology fellow at the University of Colorado.

Through his life and training, Evan has always focused on finding the beauty in the details. During college, a jujitsu and judo instructor told him, “Once you think you’ve mastered a skill, remember, you’ve only mastered 95% of the skill. There’s always a new twist to add that will make you feel like a beginner again.” The idea that you can never be perfect but can always seek improvement and mastery stuck with him. This has translated well into neurosurgery, where the field is constantly expanding, techniques are changing, and technology continues to evolve incessantly. He enjoys every opportunity to tailor an approach to care that focuses on the individual patient as the center of focus. This holistic approach takes their unique goals and physiology into account. Whether this means a new approach to conservative management or a refined surgical approach, or even a referral to a colleague, it is of utmost importance that the patient feels seen, heard, understood, and believed.

Outside of work, Evan also thrives when adventuring with his friends and trusted dog, Kinley (who might join for your clinic visit if you wish). He recently embarked on the Tour Du Mont Blanc in France, Italy, and Switzerland, enjoyed camping in the backcountry of Denali National Park with several friends, and is beginning to explore the local and distant natural beauty in California. You might also catch him on a tennis court, out running or cycling, or learning how to catch a wave on his surfboard (still a foamie!).
