Dr. Philip Chen earned his medical degree at George Washington University School of Medicine where he graduated with Distinction (top 15%). He completed his internal medicine training at UC Davis where he achieved the top national in service exam score in his class during the consecutive years he took the exam. He is currently board certified in internal medicine and was actively involved in teaching and training residents and students as clinical faculty for the UC Riverside Internal Medicine Residency Program since its beginning in 2013. He completed his Gastroenterology fellowship at UC Irvine where he also performed well, achieving the top scores among his peers for his entire fellowship on both the internal in service exam and on the American GastroenterologyAssociation national in service exam.
In addition to being board certified in Gastroenterology, he is an active member of American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and Southern California Society of Gastroenterology. He is currently being considered for Fellowship to the American College of Gastroenterology, an honor bestowed to select active members demonstrating significant professional achievement and superior competence within the field of Gastroenterology. He has published in multiple peer reviewed journals as well as the local Inland Empire Magazine promoting colon cancer screening and evolving techniques in colonoscopy.
Prior to joining United Gastroenterologists, he practiced at the Riverside Medical Clinic for the past 7 years. There, he helped enhance the quality of care of Gastroenterology in Riverside area by introducing numerous advanced higher risk endoscopic procedures and performing one of the first fecal transplants for c. difficile infection at Riverside Community Hospital. Some of the advanced procedures he performs include endoscopic mucosal resection of large polyps, single operator cholangioscopy with electrohydraulic lithotripsy, advanced techniques for bile duct access for ERCP, and luminal stenting. He is certified by American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy STAR program to perform large colon polyp removal and focuses on successful removal, surveillance and minimizing complications.
Utilizing an innovative water immersion technique for colonoscopy, he has achieved an adenoma detection rate in the top 1%. He has a strong interest in performing quality colonoscopy and undertaking the challenges of completing difficult and previously incomplete colonoscopy exams.
